In Photos: Pope Francis Visits Africa

Pope Francis shouted for peace, an honest future and a complete rejection of corruption on the third day of his named to the Democratic Republic of Congo, urging the tens of thousands of young Catholics gathered in a stadium in Kinshasa to yowl, all together,“No to corruption.”

The crowds required.

He spurred them to feel as “one church and one people,” because each and everyone’s good “depends on the other’s,” he said.

Since his arrival, Francis — the first pope to visit Congo proper 1985 — has tried to heal the deep wounds left by what he has shouted as the “forgotten genocide,” the bloody conflict that is affecting especially the eastern part of the republic. The pope had to cancel a visit to the area, lest he endanger the faithful gathering to see him. Over a hundred militant groups have been inflicting violence on locals in eastern Congo for decades, ransacking villages, killing residents and displacing millions.

On Wednesday, the pope directly appealed to the warring groups in Congo to lay down arms and stop the killings, and urged everyone, including the victims of such shocking violence, to forgive, which he said would allow the control to heal.
